Guar Gum Powder

Guar is a natural seed grown in Pakistan and india since centuries. Main use of this seed was to provide cattle food and to improve land fertility.

Guar Gum powder is the endosperm polysaccharide of guar. It contains 34.6% d-galactopyranosyle units and 63.4% d-mannopyranosyl units. The high purity guar gum is obtained from the ground endosperm of cyamopsis tetragonolobus (leguminosae). It consists mainly of high molecular weight hydrocolloidal polysaccharide composed of galactose and mannose units combined through glycosidic linkages, which may be described as galactomannan.

It is a white to yellowish white, nearly odourless powder, despersible in either hots or cold water forming a sol, having a ph between 5.4 and 7.0.

Guar Gum Solutions

One of the important properties of Guar Gum is its ability to hydrate rapidly in cold water to produce highly viscous solutions.

Solution of Guar Gum of less than 1% are less thixotropic than a solution of concentration of 1% or higher. Viscosities of 0.3% solution change only slightly with increasing shear rates, while at the same shear rates, solution of 1% concentration or higher changed markedly. As with most other gums, the viscossity of guar is dependent on time, temprature, concentration, ph, ionic strength, and the type of agitation. A1% aqueous dispersion of a good quality Guar Gum has a viscosity of 3000 - 6000 cps.

In practical application a hydration time of about 2 hours is required to reach maximum viscosity. For some applications in, which there is a need for an immediate high initial viscosity, very fine mesh Guar Gum can be used.
